Complete Tutorial on Mailto Links: What They Are & How to Use Them
Blog post from Mailtrap
Mailto links use HTML anchor tags to open a user’s default email client with prefilled recipient addresses and can be customized with multiple recipients, subject lines, message bodies, CC and BCC fields, line breaks, and new-tab behavior for webmail clients. Because the mailto protocol cannot securely add attachments, websites can instead place generated file-download links in the email body, while online generators can simplify URL encoding and email-testing tools can help validate HTML and delivery setups. Their usefulness is limited by users’ potentially incorrect default mail-client settings and by the ease with which publicly exposed addresses can be harvested for spam or outreach. Contact forms offer an alternative that hides email addresses, collects structured information, and can be protected with CAPTCHA, though some users may still prefer direct email communication. Default mailto handlers can be changed through Windows, macOS, Chrome, Firefox, and Gmail settings to ensure links open in the intended application.
