Blockchain-based email aims to improve traditional email’s persistent security, authentication, and privacy weaknesses by using decentralized ledgers to verify senders, encrypt messages, and reduce reliance on providers that may scan or monetize user data. Early services such as CryptaMail, Mailchain, and LedgerMail use varying approaches, including on-chain message storage, off-chain storage with blockchain-based identity verification, and hybrid integration with Gmail or Outlook. However, widespread adoption faces major practical barriers: blockchain storage requirements are poorly suited to the size and volume of global email traffic, immutable records may expose metadata and prevent deletion, compatibility with standard SMTP email can undermine decentralization, and current networks lack the scalability and cost efficiency to process hundreds of billions of daily messages. As a result, hybrid systems that apply blockchain primarily for authentication or encryption may be more viable than fully blockchain-based email, while established encrypted email providers such as ProtonMail, Tutanota, and Mailfence already offer mature alternatives with end-to-end encryption and privacy-focused features.
