Summary

A return path, also called the envelope sender, MAIL FROM, or reverse path, is a hidden email header that designates the mailbox receiving non-delivery notifications and bounce reports, helping senders identify delivery failures and maintain email lists. Unlike visible From or no-reply addresses, it is generally found only in raw message headers through clients such as Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, and Apple Mail. Variable Envelope Return Path (VERP) can encode each recipient’s address into a unique return path, making it easier to associate bounces with specific contacts and automate list cleanup. Return paths are also important for deliverability because they support SPF domain alignment under DMARC, which helps receiving servers validate legitimate messages and reduce phishing or spoofing. Delivery SMTP servers add the return-path line when messages leave the SMTP environment, and senders can often configure custom return-path domains through email service providers or DNS records to improve authentication alignment, bounce tracking, and inbox placement.
