Tis the Season: 3D Observability for Prometheus + Grafana + Octoprint
Blog post from Logz.io
Household 3D printing has become significantly more user-friendly and affordable over the past decade, transforming home spaces into capable makerspaces. However, challenges such as thermal runaway errors can still occur, prompting the need for effective monitoring solutions. By integrating Octoprint, Prometheus, and Grafana, users can achieve comprehensive 3D printer observability, allowing them to preserve metrics, visualize printer activity, and receive alerts for issues like temperature spikes or print status changes. Octoprint serves as the control interface, while the Prometheus Exporter plugin exposes necessary metrics. Prometheus collects these metrics, sending them to Logz.io for visualization and alert management in Grafana. The setup involves configuring Octoprint, Prometheus, and Docker on a Raspberry Pi, enabling users to create custom dashboards and alerts to monitor 3D printing operations effectively.
