PromCon Recap: Unveiling Perses, the GitOps-Friendly Metrics Visualization Tool

PromCon 2023 highlighted the launch of the Perses project, a new open-source metrics visualization tool designed to address challenges in managing large-scale dashboards faced by heavy users of Grafana. Developed by Amadeus and spearheaded by Augustin Husson, Perses introduces a "dashboard as code" approach that integrates GitOps and Kubernetes features, enabling users to manage dashboards more efficiently by storing them as code alongside applications. This innovative tool supports plugins and offers embedding capabilities, making it adaptable for various platforms, including Red Hat OpenShift and Chronosphere, which have already integrated Perses into their systems. As an open-source project under the Linux Foundation, Perses aims to join the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), positioning itself as a potential alternative to Grafana, especially following Grafana's relicensing. While still in its early stages, Perses has garnered support from the Prometheus community and maintains a promising roadmap, including plans for Kubernetes-native modes and expanded visualization capabilities, signaling its potential impact on the observability landscape.
