Using a proto-persona for UX design

User personas and proto-personas are both valuable tools in UX design, but they differ significantly in their formation and purpose. While standard user personas are based on extensive research and validated information about users, proto-personas are initially built upon assumptions and beliefs and are not research-backed. Proto-personas serve as an initial guide in the design process, helping to prioritize research and design decisions when resources are limited or when starting with a blank slate. They provide a cost-effective and quick way to begin understanding user needs and preferences, though they are intended to be iterated upon and validated over time. However, proto-personas are not suitable for complex, high-stakes projects where detailed and accurate user information is crucial. They should be seen as a starting point that evolves into a true user persona as more evidence is gathered through ongoing research.
