React Markdown alternatives: Benchmarking 3 streaming renderers
Blog post from LogRocket
A benchmark compared react-markdown with Streamdown, Markstream, and Comark in a React replay app that streamed recorded Markdown responses of varying length and complexity, measuring rendering responsiveness, main-thread work, syntax artifacts, and approximate page sizes under native and CPU-throttled conditions. react-markdown performed comparably well for short and medium responses, but its configuration using rehype-highlight incurred substantially more work and frequent frame delays for a long, code-heavy response under throttling, while its non-highlighted version remained comparatively smooth. In the long frame-paced throttled test, Markstream used the least main-thread time, Streamdown reduced work relative to highlighted react-markdown but showed an unusually large worst-frame interval, and Comark performed poorly in the tested setup, potentially because its plugins were re-created during renders. Diagram support, highlighting implementations, bundle estimates, and incomplete-Markdown behavior differed across configurations, limiting direct feature-for-feature conclusions. The findings suggest retaining react-markdown for modest workloads, evaluating alternatives for long highlighted code responses, and testing real application content, update patterns, plugins, devices, download costs, and interaction responsiveness before selecting a renderer.
