Our robo advisor: A lesson in skipping UX research

Understanding user behavior is crucial for product success, as demonstrated by the failure and subsequent success experienced by a team developing a financial app. Initially, they spent four months developing a robo advisor feature based on assumptions and competitor influence, which failed to engage users, with less than three percent trying the feature and minimal impact on revenue. This failure was attributed to the lack of user research and understanding of the users' needs and anxieties. In contrast, when the team shifted to a user-driven approach by integrating an in-app feedback feature, they saw significant engagement and valuable insights that allowed them to address user concerns more effectively, leading to improved user experiences and a higher app store rating. This experience underscored the importance of UX research in guiding product development, emphasizing that listening to users and validating ideas early can prevent wasted efforts and resources while ensuring that product features resonate with actual user needs.
