How to build your first Claude Code mod (no coding required)
Blog post from LogRocket
Claude Code mods are JavaScript or TypeScript plugins that run inside Claude Code at fixed events, providing deterministic monitoring, modification, or blocking of agent actions that ordinary prompts, skills, MCP servers, and external settings hooks cannot reliably enforce. The article contrasts mods with skills, which Claude may choose to use, MCP servers that provide external tools or data, and settings hooks that run as separate processes. It demonstrates three examples: a usage-meter mod that displays session and weekly quota information with threshold warnings; a secret-guard mod that scans public Git pushes for potential secrets and masks sensitive values before Claude can read them; and the third-party time-machine mod, which records steps and file snapshots to help identify and undo problematic changes. Because mods have broad access to local files, programs, environment variables, and potentially the internet, users are urged to inspect them before installation with the Claude plugin validation command and review unexpected capabilities. The piece concludes that mods are suited to repetitive checks and safeguards, can often be created by asking Claude Code to generate them, and should be treated as powerful but potentially risky extensions.
