Generative vs. agentic AI: The next wave of the AI revolution

Generative AI, known for transforming various tasks like Q&A, image generation, and coding, is the foundation for the emerging agentic AI, which promises to further revolutionize the future of work by enabling systems to autonomously observe environments, create plans, and execute tasks without human intervention. Unlike generative AI, which primarily generates content based on existing data, agentic AI is characterized by its ability to interpret context, select goals, and continuously learn, allowing it to autonomously make decisions and handle unforeseen problems. Built on generative AI models and enhanced by policy, memory, execution, and learning layers, agentic AI can be applied in diverse areas such as software development, inventory management, personal assistance, and customer support. While agentic AI excels in tasks that are predictable and digitally executable, it lacks human traits like creativity and empathy, suggesting that while it may automate certain roles, it cannot fully replace the nuanced human touch. Product managers are encouraged to leverage agentic AI by automating routine tasks and integrating AI solutions into products to address predictable and well-defined customer issues.
