Exploring the new CSS color functions: CSS Color Module Level 5
Blog post from LogRocket
CSS has evolved from relying on predefined color keywords and HEX values to more flexible and user-friendly color functions like RGB, HSL, and the introduction of the alpha channel for transparency. The CSS Color Module Level 5 expands these capabilities with new functions such as HWB (hue, whiteness, blackness), LAB, and LCH, which offer a broader spectrum of colors and more closely align with human color perception. These enhancements also include color-mix and color-contrast functions that facilitate mixing colors and ensuring accessibility through improved contrast. While these new features promise a richer color experience, they are not yet fully supported across all browsers, with some only available in the latest versions of Firefox and Safari. The article also highlights the accent-color property for customizing form controls and acknowledges that although some features remain experimental, they indicate a promising future for web color representation.
