Summary

A field test compared Chrome, Safari 27, and Firefox browser-debugging MCP tools by asking an AI agent with no file or shell access to diagnose four planted bugs in a React dashboard: a sequential network waterfall, a layout overflow, a console error caused by inconsistent API data, and slow typing caused by context-driven React re-renders. All three browsers successfully identified the common network, layout, and console issues, although their tool availability, startup token costs, and handling of large outputs differed; Safari used fewer tokens but exposed fewer tools, while Firefox required its developer preset to access network, console, and debugger capabilities. For the React issue, Firefox produced the most accurate bare-browser diagnosis because it used debugger tools to read source files and correctly recognized that updates to a shared context bypassed an existing React.memo wrapper, whereas Chrome and Safari inspected React internals and often incorrectly blamed a missing memoization. Adding Chrome’s experimental React DevTools MCP improved its result substantially, providing an exact diagnosis and render counts, though with high token usage. The results suggest that source-code access or dedicated React tooling improves debugging precision more than browser choice alone, while human review remains necessary to validate diagnoses and select an appropriate design fix.
