Async standups: Pros, cons, do they make sense for you?
Blog post from LogRocket
Daily standups, integral to agile software development, offer benefits like alignment and collaboration but at the cost of time and productivity. An experiment with asynchronous standups, where team members provide updates via a dedicated channel, initially boosted productivity and engagement by reducing interruptions and making updates more concise. However, challenges such as updates becoming overlooked, increased problem-solving cycle times, and decreased team morale due to reduced human interaction emerged over time. A balanced approach of combining asynchronous updates with occasional synchronous meetings improved issue resolution and team dynamics but still encountered challenges with engagement on non-meeting days. The experiment suggests that while asynchronous communication can be efficient, it may not suit closely-knit teams, indicating the importance of context in choosing between synchronous and asynchronous standups.
