WTH Is LocalStack for AWS? A Practical Intro for Developers
Blog post from LocalStack
LocalStack for AWS provides developers with a fully functional local AWS cloud stack that emulates over 100 AWS services, such as Lambda, S3, and DynamoDB, within a Docker container on their machine, eliminating the need for real AWS accounts and associated costs. This tool allows developers to work with AWS services locally, ensuring faster feedback loops, reduced cloud expenses, and isolated development environments, thereby addressing common challenges like slow feedback, unexpected costs, and shared environment issues. LocalStack supports a wide range of AWS services and integrates seamlessly with tools like Terraform and the AWS CLI, offering a free tier for non-commercial use and paid options for additional features. Starting March 23, 2026, LocalStack will require an auth token for accessing its latest releases, even on the free tier, but signing up for an account is free. The platform also offers features like persistence capabilities, Chaos Engineering tools, and a permissive IAM by default for accelerated development.
