Running Lambda Web Functions Locally with LocalStack
Blog post from LocalStack
AWS Lambda Web Functions, introduced in October 2026, allow Node.js HTTP servers to run directly on Lambda without event-to-HTTP adapters, enabling each environment to process many concurrent requests and reducing cold-start pressure. The tutorial demonstrates LocalStack’s support for this API by deploying an Express-based URL shortener that stores links and click counts in DynamoDB and QR-code images in S3, using a versioned S3 package, an execution role, and the AWS CLI. Web functions use immutable revisions for code and configuration snapshots and HTTPS endpoints that can route traffic between revisions for deployments, while Lambda environments run on Arm64 with fixed CPU and memory limits and support up to 128 concurrent requests. LocalStack reproduces much of the AWS behavior locally, including containers, credentials, endpoint routing, logs, metrics, authentication checks, scaling, CloudFormation resources, and optional hot reloading, though it has some parity limitations. The walkthrough covers packaging dependencies because the runtime does not include the AWS SDK, creating required storage and permissions, publishing and testing the endpoint, inspecting container activity and observability data, and explains that the same package can be deployed to AWS with real account details and HTTPS endpoints.
