AI Writes the Code. Who Tests It? Inside the State of AI in Cloud Development 2026
Blog post from LocalStack
A LocalStack-commissioned survey by Dimensional Research of 309 developers and engineering managers at large U.S. and Canadian enterprises finds that AI has shifted a major software delivery bottleneck from writing cloud code to validating it in cloud environments. While 79% of respondents report that AI agents can access development, testing, or staging environments, 97% express concerns about that access, reflecting tension between rapid AI-assisted development and security or cost controls. Staging delays are widespread, with 87% waiting at least two minutes for each update to appear, while respondents estimate that nearly 40% of AI-generated code never reaches production because it is abandoned, revised, or delayed in review. The report examines differences by role and company size, staging failures, agent access near production, and factors associated with successfully shipping AI-generated code, while LocalStack presents its isolated local cloud testing platform as a way to reduce reliance on shared cloud accounts and credentials.
