Background

LlamaIndex used Stainless to generate and maintain its LlamaParse SDKs and CLI tooling across languages such as Python, TypeScript, and Go, avoiding the substantial effort of building idiomatic client libraries by hand. Stainless provided a layer between LlamaIndex’s OpenAPI specification and the public SDK interface, enabling consistent resource structures, typing, pagination, retries, async support, documentation, and releases while allowing generated source code to remain inspectable and customizable. The platform also encouraged LlamaIndex to treat its OpenAPI specification as a core product artifact by exposing inconsistencies in naming, schemas, and API design. Following Stainless’s May 2026 announcement that it was joining Anthropic and winding down hosted products, LlamaIndex is migrating away while seeking to preserve the SDK interfaces users already depend on, since replacing a generator can alter public method names, models, parameters, return types, and behavior. Despite the transition, LlamaIndex says it would choose Stainless again, citing the leverage it gave a small team and its broader lesson that SDK design and developer experience are essential infrastructure.
