In early 2023, during an offsite event, the European engineering team at Linear identified a need to enhance their focus on quality by collectively scrutinizing and addressing subtle flaws in their product. This led to the creation of "Quality Wednesdays," a dedicated time each week for engineers to identify and fix minor imperfections that degrade the user experience, rather than addressing obvious bugs. This initiative fosters a culture where attention to detail becomes habitual, akin to routine personal hygiene, thus encouraging engineers to consistently refine the product. Over two years, more than 1,000 small improvements have been made, significantly enhancing the product's overall quality and changing the team's approach to developing new features by training them to identify and avoid potential issues before they occur. This practice has not only elevated Linear's quality standards but also ingrained a keen sense of detail within the team, making them more adept at catching inconsistencies during the development process.
