Linear has undergone a comprehensive redesign to transform its interface into a more cohesive and purpose-built system for product development, as detailed in the second part of a series by Karri Saarinen and the team. The redesign focused on minimizing visual noise and enhancing navigation elements by adjusting the sidebar, tabs, headers, and panels. The project began with concept exploration using Figma and involved stress tests, behavior definitions, and the creation of a prototype, emphasizing the importance of a dedicated team and streamlined decision-making. The new design incorporated a more uniform and adaptable theme generation system, shifting from HSL to LCH color space for better consistency in appearance. Internal testing and feedback loops were integral to the redesign process, ensuring the UI aligned with user needs and functionality across different platforms. The update is now available to all Linear users, with the company inviting feedback and encouraging applications for new roles in product, design, and brand.
