The software factory needs to become a product factory
Blog post from LightSprint
Coding agents and software factories can accelerate implementation by turning well-defined requests into pull requests through automated sandboxes, tests, previews, and reviews, but their typical output-focused metrics do not show whether a feature solved a customer problem or improved business outcomes. The proposed “product factory” expands this model into a continuous Signal, Plan, Build, Review, and Learn loop, beginning with evidence such as customer feedback, support issues, usage data, and market changes, then translating it into detailed plans, implementing and reviewing changes, and evaluating results after release. This approach places product managers, designers, operations, support, sales, and engineers in complementary roles, with product people shaping decisions and engineers maintaining technical guardrails and merge approval. LightSprint describes its current platform as a shared workspace connected to real codebases that supports plain-language planning, agent-assisted builds, sandbox previews, and existing approval workflows through tools such as Slack, Linear, and Jira, while aiming to add smoother integration of analytics and competitive signals to guide future product decisions.
