Release integrity: Carrying intent from PR to production
Blog post from LaunchDarkly
Release integrity is the practice of ensuring that users experience software changes according to the team’s original intent, including the intended audience, rollout pace, expected outcomes, and reversal plan. While development workflows often document goals, implementation plans, tests, and reviews before deployment, they may not carry that information into production decisions, leaving default deployment settings to determine exposure and success criteria. Effective release planning addresses a change’s risk level, rollout strategy, outcome metrics, and rollback or recovery procedures, combining service-health monitoring with measures of whether the change achieved its user-facing purpose. Teams can make these decisions consistent and proportionate by establishing policy-based risk criteria and creating release plans during pull-request review, where intent and implementation are both visible. LaunchDarkly describes using its Release Autopilot product internally to support this approach, arguing that change-level production control helps software factories safely validate releases beyond the point of deployment.
