Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD), observed on the third Thursday of May, aims to raise awareness about the importance of digital accessibility and inclusion for people with disabilities. It highlights the need for accessible technologies, such as assistive devices, that enable individuals with disabilities to engage fully in society and access the same opportunities as others. Approximately 1.3 billion people worldwide live with some form of impairment, and accessibility is crucial for their participation in various aspects of life, from education to employment. Making products and websites more accessible benefits not only individuals but also businesses by expanding their consumer base, improving user experience, and ensuring compliance with legal standards. However, challenges such as cost, lack of awareness, and technological limitations can hinder the implementation of accessibility measures. Overcoming these challenges involves integrating accessibility from the design stage, educating stakeholders, and leveraging existing resources. The article underscores the necessity of promoting accessibility to ensure equal opportunities and highlights the author's, Pricilla Bilavendran's, commitment to advocacy and mentorship in this area.
