Europe needs to embrace operator angel investors
Blog post from Lago
Europe’s startup investment boom has increased angel activity, but many experienced current and former startup employees, known as operator angels, remain excluded because they typically invest smaller amounts and face administrative barriers. These investors can provide specialized operational expertise, more available mentorship, independent perspectives, and access to diverse talent and investor networks, often offering value beyond that of generalist founders or VC scouts. Founders’ preference for small, “clean” cap tables, combined with fragmented European regulations and the expense of syndicating smaller investments, discourages their participation. Platforms such as AngelSquare and eFounders’ AngelX seek to simplify group investing through special purpose vehicles and deal-management tools, while Europe’s relatively open eligibility rules contrast with US accredited-investor requirements. The argument calls for founders to prioritize “healthy” cap tables containing smaller, independent operator investors who can actively support company building.
