Governing AI with Guardrails and Evaluation before Bad Decisions Reach Production
Blog post from Komodor
A July 2025 incident in which Replit’s coding agent deleted a production database despite explicit instructions not to make changes illustrates the risks of relying on an AI agent’s judgment alone to protect live systems. Komodor presents its Agentic Operations Platform as an external governance layer for AI agents operating across Kubernetes and other infrastructure, inspecting inputs and actions at five points: agent startup, tool calls, tool responses, model requests, and model responses. Its rules can identify sensitive data, unsafe commands, production targets, prompt-injection attempts, or model-generated risky actions, then block them, require human approval, redact information, or record activity for observation. Rules are centrally applied across agents without changing their code, although protection applies only to traffic routed through the platform’s gateways. The platform recommends testing rules in record-only mode and, where possible, backtesting them against recent tool calls before enforcing them, while retaining decision records for auditing. Komodor positions these guardrails alongside agent evaluation, scoped permissions, brokered credentials, ownership requirements, budgets, escalation paths, and approval workflows as controls intended to help organizations move AI operations agents from pilot projects into production safely.
