Functional Vs Regression Testing: Key Differences
Blog post from Keploy
Functional testing verifies that new or modified features meet requirements by checking expected behavior for defined inputs, while regression testing reruns previously passing tests after code, configuration, dependency, or infrastructure changes to detect unintended breakages. The same test case can serve both roles: it is functional when first validating a feature and regression-oriented when repeated later to protect established behavior. Regression testing is usually composed of functional tests but can also include non-functional checks such as performance benchmarks, and teams may run full, selective, risk-based, or partial suites depending on speed and risk. A practical workflow is to create functional tests during development, add them to the regression suite after release, run relevant tests on each pull request, and add tests for production defects. Because suites expand over time, automation is important, with tools such as Keploy able to record API traffic and dependencies, generate reusable tests and mocks, replay them in CI, and flag unexpected response changes.
