Wayland By Default in 2026.1 EAP | The JetBrains Platform Blog
Blog post from JetBrains
Starting from version 2026.1, IntelliJ-based IDEs will natively support Wayland on compatible Linux desktop environments, reflecting Wayland's rising status as the primary display server. This transition aims to enhance user experience by collecting feedback during early access program releases before a broader rollout. Native Wayland support will replace the X application mode, offering improvements like enhanced stability, drag-and-drop functionality, and input methods support, although some user interface differences may arise due to Wayland's distinct technical architecture. Despite these changes, X11 will remain supported, allowing users to switch back using XWayland for compatibility. The transition, facilitated by the WLToolkit subsystem and contributions to the OpenJDK project Wakefield, marks a significant step in developing a stable and integrated Wayland experience. Users' feedback has been crucial in identifying and prioritizing enhancements, with the upcoming version addressing many reported issues to improve stability, performance, and desktop integration.
