Summary

CLion 2026.2.2 introduces clion-embedded-hardfault, an AI debugging skill that helps diagnose ARM Cortex-M hard faults by using MCP-based access to decoded fault registers, exception frames, memory, disassembly, and peripheral register data. Designed to reduce the manual work of interpreting CFSR and HFSR registers, locating faulting instructions, and reproducing crashes, the skill traces faults to their likely source and can suggest or apply fixes before rerunning debugging sessions for verification. It is vendor-agnostic, supporting tools such as Lauterbach TRACE32, Segger J-Link, and ST-LINK, and activates when debugging stops in common fault handlers or when relevant fault-register terms are mentioned. The feature is enabled by default but requires CLion’s MCP server to be turned on, works in AI chat and CLI modes for Claude Code and Codex, and is currently limited to CLI mode for GitHub Copilot. Its underlying tools also provide agents with broader debugging capabilities, including control of sessions, breakpoints, stepping, and inspection of variables, memory, registers, and disassembly.
