rtk Claude Code Token Savings: A Skill Trial Benchmark

The "Rust Token Killer" (rtk) was tested to evaluate its claims of reducing token usage by 60-90% for coding agents. The results showed that instead of saving tokens, rtk led to a 7.6% increase in costs at low reasoning effort and no significant savings at high effort. The tool works by intercepting shell commands and providing compressed output to the model, but it only interacts with a small fraction of the agent's activities, as many tasks use built-in tools that bypass the Bash hook. Additionally, the compression did not compromise task quality, although it occasionally caused minor increases in processing time due to extra explorations or broken rewrites. Despite the appealing concept and effective operation of rtk, its self-reported savings misrepresent actual financial outcomes, as the tool's counterfactual assumptions do not align with the real-world billing scenario.
