IDE Plugin Generator – The New Beginning - The JetBrains Blog
Blog post from JetBrains
IntelliJ IDEA 2026.1 has introduced a new web-API-based IDE plugin generator, streamlining the process of creating IntelliJ Platform plugins by merging the strengths of the previous IDE plugin generator and the IntelliJ Platform Plugin Template. This new generator aims to simplify plugin development by reducing maintenance overhead, ensuring consistent and up-to-date templates, and providing a unified workflow with a single entry point accessible both through JetBrains IDEs and a web browser. The previous dual approach required updates in two separate places and created user confusion due to differing functionalities and integration options. The new generator offers consistent templates, automatic updates, and integration features such as GitHub workflows, issue templates, and Dependabot configuration, accessible via the IDE or a web UI. Future plans include adding new features like UI integration tests and Qodana setup to further enhance the plugin development process.
