Air Launches as Public Preview – A New Wave of Dev Tooling Built on 26 Years of Experience | The JetBrains Blog
Blog post from JetBrains
JetBrains has launched Air, a new development tool designed to integrate AI agents into the software development process, marking a shift from traditional IDEs to an agentic development environment. Built on 26 years of experience in creating developer tools, Air allows developers to delegate coding tasks to multiple AI agents and run them concurrently, providing a more cohesive and context-aware experience than the fragmented current state of agent-based development. Air is available to developers with JetBrains AI subscriptions and supports agents like Codex, Claude Agent, Gemini CLI, and Junie, while also offering the flexibility to switch between agents without disrupting workflows. It incorporates essential tools such as a terminal and Git client, enabling developers to manage agent outputs effectively within their entire codebase. The tool prioritizes agent orchestration without replacing existing workflows and supports local and sandboxed agent runs to maintain organization across projects. While the current release focuses on individual productivity, JetBrains envisions a future of enhanced human-agent collaboration starting at the task definition stage, with plans for team collaboration features and enterprise offerings in the pipeline.
