Capacitor is implementing a new release cadence strategy to provide a more proactive and reliable update process for developers, moving away from the previous practice of releasing major updates shortly before mobile app store compliance deadlines. This shift aims to give plugin authors and app developers ample time to adapt to changes, with the new cadence beginning in the pre-release stage to identify and address breaking changes and introduce new features in anticipation of upcoming Android and iOS updates. Once the final versions of these operating systems are released, a new major version of Capacitor will be prepared for production, although it won't be immediately set as the default for new projects. This allows for a period where developers can opt to upgrade while ensuring plugins are compatible, and eventually, the new version will become the default as developers are encouraged to upgrade ahead of new app store requirements, with a six-month lead time before these requirements take effect. To ensure stability, all major versions will receive six months of maintenance support, with an additional six months available through enterprise services, as the upcoming release of Capacitor 6 beta marks the start of this new cadence.
