Announcing Ionic Framework 9
Blog post from Ionic
Ionic Framework 9 introduces updated routing support with React Router 6 and Vue Router 5, Angular compatibility from versions 18 through 22, refreshed Stencil output targets, and a migration utility intended to simplify upgrades from version 8. The React integration was redesigned so Ionic manages view retention independently of React Router internals, addressing issues such as swipe-back behavior on parameterized routes and preparing for future React Router 7 support, while Vue Router 5 largely preserves existing application behavior but requires Vue 3.5 and deprecates navigation-guard next() calls. Angular support defaults to zoneless change detection while retaining Zone.js compatibility, and Angular 22 upgrades include updated imports, OnPush defaults, and newer TypeScript and Node requirements. New UI capabilities include rich content in select options, such as images, icons, badges, and descriptions, plus ion-icon support for font-based icon libraries and slotted SVGs. The npx @ionic/migrate tool can automatically address several breaking changes, report manual steps, run in preview mode, and support CI checks. Ionic also outlined Modular Ionic, planned for Q2 2027, as an effort to separate visual styling from component behavior for greater customization.
