The ICT sector is responsible for approximately 1.5 to 4 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, comparable to the aviation industry, highlighting the significant environmental impact of digital infrastructure. Engineers often make infrastructure decisions without visibility into the environmental or financial impact of these choices. To address this, Infracost Cloud has introduced InfraCarbon, a tool that shows the carbon impact of infrastructure changes directly in pull requests, alongside cost information, making the environmental impact of decisions more tangible and relatable. Developed in partnership with Greenpixie, InfraCarbon provides real-time carbon equivalences, such as flights avoided, to motivate engineers to make more sustainable choices. This initiative aligns cost efficiency with carbon reduction, offering a dual benefit of environmental responsibility and financial savings, while also contributing to a growing emphasis on sustainability in corporate reporting. By integrating carbon insights into the existing workflow, InfraCarbon aims to shift decision-making to a more informed and sustainable approach, fostering a broader ecosystem around FinOps and sustainability.
