Kubernetes rightsizing, fixed at the source
Blog post from Infracost
Infracost introduces Kubernetes rightsizing and cost-governance features intended to reduce overprovisioned CPU and memory requests, which reserve cluster capacity regardless of actual usage and can obscure ownership when workloads lack labels. By combining cloud billing data with Datadog container utilization metrics, it identifies underused workloads and recommends request levels based on P95 utilization, pricing savings at organizations’ actual discounted rates. Recommendations can be sent through Slack, tickets, coding agents, or pull requests, with changes made in workload definitions rather than directly in clusters so repositories remain the source of truth. To prevent waste from returning, Infracost statically analyzes Kubernetes manifests, Helm charts, and Kustomize overlays in pull requests and editors, estimating the cost effects of changes to replicas, compute requests, storage, and supported resource types using stable reference rates. It also enforces Kubernetes label policies after templating and transformations to support cost attribution across workloads, volumes, and load balancers, without requiring cluster access or installed agents.
