Infracost is an open-source tool designed to provide developers and DevOps engineers with cost estimates for their Infrastructure as Code (IaC) implementations, aiming to address the increasing complexity of cloud costs, which have grown significantly since 2012. The tool is a command-line interface (CLI) that integrates into existing development and operations workflows to provide cost visibility early in the process, reducing the risk of unexpected high bills. Initially supporting AWS and Terraform, Infracost plans to extend its compatibility to other cloud providers like Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Azure, as well as additional IaC tools such as Pulumi. Besides basic infrastructure costs, Infracost seeks to account for more unpredictable expenses like data transfer and usage-based costs, and the developers are open to suggestions for improving the handling of these costs.
