Root Cause Analysis Workflows Using InfluxDB
Blog post from InfluxData
InfluxDB is presented as a central telemetry platform for root cause analysis in distributed systems, where fragmented logs and diverse technologies can be unified through their shared time-based data. The proposed four-step workflow begins by identifying T-0, the precise onset of user impact, and establishing a 30-to-60-minute baseline window before the incident; it then correlates the four golden signals of latency, traffic, errors, and saturation on a common timeline to identify meaningful patterns. Investigators can use tags to break aggregate metrics down by infrastructure dimensions such as containers or services, helping distinguish systemic problems from isolated failures. Finally, suspected causes should meet tests of precedence, occurring at or before T-0, and proportionality, with their intensity corresponding to the outage’s severity; functions such as derivatives can reveal accelerating trends, such as rising database connections before an error surge. This time-series-driven approach aims to move incident response from reactive troubleshooting toward more systematic, evidence-based diagnosis and prevention.
