Data Center Telemetry in the AI Era
Blog post from InfluxData
AI-focused data centers are driving far higher rack densities, liquid-cooling requirements, and rapid power fluctuations, making unified telemetry increasingly important for detecting failures, cooling drift, power issues, and slow training jobs before they cause outages. Effective telemetry combines time-stamped data across facility systems and IT layers—including power, cooling, GPUs, networks, hardware management, schedulers, and job logs—because causes and symptoms often occur in different parts of the stack. The post identifies challenges such as incompatible protocols, high-cardinality metrics, inconsistent sampling rates and clocks, organizational silos, long-term retention needs, fleet configuration drift, and separation between operational technology and IT networks. It recommends collecting data from every layer into a common time-aligned store, matching collection frequency to signal volatility, retaining fast protective controls locally, using open historical formats, and centrally managing collection agents. Telegraf is presented as a plugin-based collector that can integrate existing exporters and read-only facility data sources, while Telegraf Controller provides centralized configuration, staged rollouts, health monitoring, and adjustable collection resolution. InfluxDB 3 is positioned as a high-cardinality time-series platform that supports long-term object-storage retention, SQL or InfluxQL querying, self-hosted deployments, and near-real-time Python-based processing for automation. Combined telemetry can support correlating training workloads with power swings, proactively retiring deteriorating GPUs, identifying gradual liquid-cooling problems, and resolving SLA, billing, and operational responsibility disputes.
