Almost excited to get paged
Blog post from Incident.io
Product Engineer Intern Shrinidhi Sathish describes leading the development of WhatsApp notifications for on-call paging at incident.io, a feature intended to provide a more reliable alternative to SMS in regions with inconsistent cellular delivery. The project required extensive upfront scoping, integration across numerous system layers, Meta-approved message templates, phased access and customer rollout, monitoring, data imports, and careful handling of permanent versus temporary notification failures so escalations would not stall. Delays in Meta account approval and early production issues, including unsupported newlines in templates, reinforced the need to adapt quickly and prioritize unblocked work. Sathish emphasizes that the experience built confidence through significant ownership, early feedback, collaboration with experienced engineers, transparent progress updates, and responsibility for technical and product decisions. After just over a month of core development and subsequent polishing, the feature reached production, allowing users to receive incident pages through WhatsApp and giving the intern a visible, widely used result of their work.
