The Open Quantum Challenge: Quantum Simulation and QEC Decoding on Classical GPUs
Blog post from Hugging Face
The Open Quantum Challenge, hosted by FINAL-Bench and built by VIDRAFT, is a two-season competition that uses classical GPUs and a public evaluation harness to benchmark quantum simulation and quantum error-correction decoding methods without requiring quantum hardware. Season 1 asks participants to reproduce a target quantum system accurately, while Season 2 focuses on building decoders that infer and correct errors from syndrome data; both are scored against defined ground truth to support objective, reproducible, and comparable results. The initiative aims to reduce barriers created by limited quantum-device access by making relevant computational research accessible to engineers, researchers, and students with a GPU. Participants can use the Hugging Face challenge space, adapt the provided guide through agentic coding tools, test against the public harness, and submit entries, with a combined prize pool of $2,000 available across the two concurrent seasons.
