One Decision Model Instead of a Ranking Team: Short-Video and News Recommendation with autotrust/JEV-27B-VL
Blog post from Hugging Face
Autotrust presents a “decision model” approach to short-video recommendation and news search that uses JEV-27B-VL for visual and text inputs, or JEV-27B/JEV-35B for text, to directly assign calibrated probabilities to candidate items without product-specific training, engineered features, user logs, or separate ranking systems. The authors argue that this can replace much of the conventional recommendation stack—including content tagging, feature stores, recall models, click prediction, reranking, cold-start logic, and some safety classification—with a smaller system focused on candidate retrieval, prompt design, evaluation, serving, and policy enforcement. Their demos rank batches of up to eight videos using recent watch history, captions, and covers, while the news system evaluates headlines for importance and search results for relevance across several external sources. Reported offline results show performance comparable to or exceeding selected trained baselines on MicroLens, MIND, and TREC-COVID, and batch-level choice prompting was reported to be faster and more accurate than scoring candidates individually. The authors estimate that such systems could reduce a large recommendation operation from roughly 100 engineers to about 10, but acknowledge that their benchmarks are proxies rather than production evidence, candidate retrieval is still necessary, safety thresholds remain unvalidated, and licensing constraints apply to some datasets.
