Jun Kim, oMLX creator and maintainer, joins Hugging Face to support the MLX community

Hugging Face announced that Jun Kim, creator and maintainer of oMLX, has joined the company to support the growing MLX community and local AI development on Apple Silicon. MLX is Apple’s framework for local AI, while oMLX will remain an Apache 2.0 open-source project led by Kim, with Hugging Face’s funding and support intended to improve its stability and development pace. The collaboration aims to make it easier to bring model definitions from the Transformers library into MLX implementations, enabling different inference engines to focus on their specialized capabilities. Hugging Face also plans to strengthen work with related projects and teams, including mlx-lm, mlx-vlm, and LM Studio, while using oMLX as a testing ground for ideas that may be contributed upstream. Community responses were largely positive, although several commenters noted that the oMLX GitHub repository appeared to have been temporarily removed, reportedly due to an automated moderation issue.
