HiRO-ACEv2: Simulating extreme weather at 3 km resolution for a fraction of the cost
Blog post from Hugging Face
HiRO-ACEv2 is an updated AI climate-emulation system from Ai2 that combines the 100 km-resolution ACE model with HiROv2, a downscaling model that produces global rain, wind, and sea-level pressure data at 3 km resolution. Compared with its predecessor, HiROv2 predicts multiple weather fields and more accurately reproduces rare, severe events, matching high-resolution X-SHiELD simulation statistics within 3% even for events occurring roughly once per million data points. The system generates realistic tropical cyclones, mountain downslope winds, and long-term climate patterns, while producing global high-resolution output at approximately one three-hundredth of X-SHiELD’s cost. Its current limitation is that it is trained specifically to emulate X-SHiELD-compatible ACE outputs and cannot yet represent historical or warmer future climates, but planned work includes training on a 4°C-warming simulation and adding temperature, snow, and ice variables. Ai2 has also released models, tutorial notebooks, and a web demo for comparing HiRO outputs with X-SHiELD simulations.
