Granite Switch 4.1: Chat, Decisions, and Speech from One Endpoint
Blog post from Hugging Face
IBM’s Granite Switch 4.1 introduces 8B and 30B modular models that combine conversational language generation, general and safety-focused decision-making, and speech-to-text transcription through a single hosted endpoint. The models use cache-efficient Activated LoRA adapters, allowing multiple specialized capabilities to share the base model’s GPU memory footprint and reuse KV cache data, while incorporating Granite-Speech-5.0-Turbo-CTC, described as the fastest automatic speech recognition model on the OpenASR leaderboard. IBM reports that the Guardian decision adapter outperforms several competing decision models on safety tasks and that specialized Granite Libraries adapters can exceed general-purpose systems on targeted classification workloads. The release supports customizable model composition using adapters from Granite Libraries, with planned SDK and Mellea training support, and IBM demonstrates applications ranging from real-time audio transcription, summarization, and content screening to a custom 3B-parameter model that plays and narrates Doom at reportedly higher decision rates than Jev.
