Summary

bekko-static-embedding-v1 is a newly released multilingual static embedding model that represents sentences by averaging fixed token vectors, avoiding Transformer computation and enabling CPU inference reportedly 100 to 400 times faster than multilingual-e5-small. Trained from scratch on roughly 814 million contrastive text pairs across 40 languages using a custom 200,000-token tokenizer, it is presented as outperforming other public static embedding models on multilingual and English retrieval benchmarks, scoring 43.76 on MNanoBEIR and 53.71 on NanoBEIR-en. On MMTEB, it achieves a 50.18 overall average and particularly strong retrieval performance, though competing static models remain better for bitext mining and pair classification. The model approaches multilingual-e5-small on MMTEB retrieval but contextual Transformer models, the author’s smaller bekko-embedding-v1-a8m, and BM25 still lead in several settings, especially some English, long-document, and Japanese retrieval tasks. Matryoshka training allows vectors to be truncated from 1,024 dimensions with moderate quality loss, while ONNX/OpenVINO and INT8 variants reduce memory requirements; the author recommends comparing the model with BM25 and contextual encoders on a target corpus before deployment.
