Basis Global Emotions: 525 hours of expressive speech across 108 locales
Blog post from Hugging Face
Basis has released Global Emotions, a free-for-commercial-and-research dataset containing 525.17 hours and 137,696 recordings of expressive speech from 10,420 native speakers across 108 locales, 83 languages, and 90 countries. Speakers recorded identical lines under varying emotional intensities or delivery styles, enabling comparisons of changes in pitch, rhythm, emphasis, and other vocal characteristics while controlling for speaker identity and script. The dataset includes emotional steers such as happiness, frustration, apology, sarcasm, whispering, and singing, as well as 12,141 recordings with scripted nonverbal vocalizations including sighs, laughs, gasps, and scoffs. Audio was collected through Basis consumer applications, rated by native speakers, selected for instruction adherence and microphone quality, and released in its original 48 kHz, 16-bit mono WAV form without enhancement or normalization. It includes metadata for locales, speakers, series, intensity, steers, and requested scripts, though it does not include verified transcriptions, which are available separately. Basis positions the release as a resource for training and evaluating multilingual voice models with controllable expressive delivery, complementing its Conversations 1500 dataset of spontaneous multi-party speech.
