AnyLanguageModel 1.0: One Year of Local Models on Apple Platforms
Blog post from Hugging Face
AnyLanguageModel 1.0 is a drop-in, Swift-compatible alternative to Apple’s Foundation Models framework that allows developers to use the same API across on-device and hosted language models. After a year of development, it now supports local inference through llama.cpp, MLX, and Core ML, as well as providers including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Ollama, Hugging Face Inference Providers, and compatible OpenAI-style endpoints. Major additions include universal tool calling, guided generation for complex structured types, image prompting, streaming, token usage reporting, reasoning-transcript handling, and API-key retrieval through closures for short-lived credentials. Companion projects swift-huggingface and swift-xet provide accelerated Hugging Face Hub downloads for Swift applications, while Linux support enables shared client and server code. The release also highlights increasingly capable open-weight models that can run on iPhones or Macs, such as Gemma, LFM, and Qwen variants, and outlines future plans to extend the approach to decision-making and audio-oriented models.
