Earlier this year, Hex disbanded its Magic team, which was dedicated to building AI features, in favor of integrating AI development across all teams to foster an AI-first approach throughout the company. Initially, the Magic team was successful at creating AI features, but over time, it became apparent that treating AI as a separate entity led to inefficiencies and a lack of consistent integration with the rest of the platform. By eliminating the Magic team and organizing around user personas—Editors, Explorers, and Curators—Hex has enabled all teams to engage with AI development, enhancing collaboration and innovation. An AI Platform team remains to support core research and infrastructure, ensuring stable abstractions and faster development across the board. This shift reflects a broader industry trend likened to cloud integration, where AI is now an intrinsic part of Hex's product, rather than an add-on, leading to exciting new possibilities for the company.
