Building a TUI is easy now
Blog post from Hatchet
In May 2025, the author initially perceived Claude Code, a terminal-based coding agent, as a novelty but quickly recognized its potential for rapid adoption among developers. This realization led to the development of a terminal user interface (TUI) for the Hatchet platform, driven largely by Claude Code, which was completed in just a few days. Despite initial skepticism due to past unsuccessful attempts at frontend refactoring, the TUI project proved successful, receiving positive feedback for its performance and ease of use compared to traditional UI. The development process benefitted from using the Charm stack of TUI libraries and leveraging Claude Code for testing, which streamlined the creation and iteration process. This experience marked a significant shift in the author's perspective on using coding agents for non-trivial projects, emphasizing the importance of modular design, tight feedback loops, and proper specifications for successful development. The TUI's success was particularly notable given its alignment with developers' workflows, offering a more integrated and less disruptive experience compared to web applications.
