We plan to archive some unmaintained HashiCorp Packer provisioner plugins. The common practice amongst HashiCorp Packer users has been to use shell and shell-local provisioners to execute tools such as Chef, InSpec, Puppet, and Salt. Due to early first-class integrations, we have maintained plugins for these tools for more than four years, but development of some community-maintained plugins has slowed. As a result, HashiCorp may archive the plugin's repository to clearly signal the plugin's status to users. The archiving is reversible if a new maintainer steps forward and will direct users toward a different way to do things, such as using shell or shell-local provisioners for executing third-party tools. In Packer release v1.7.9, several plugins will be archived, including those for Chef, Converge, InSpec, Puppet, and Salt, with the final releases bundled into the single Packer binary. Existing binaries and documentation will remain available, but users are encouraged to migrate to using shell or shell-local provisioners before the release of Packer 1.8 in 2022.
