Gitpod has announced the discontinuation of its SaaS Cloud Development Environments (CDE), known as Gitpod Classic, by April 2025, transitioning to self-hosted solutions like Gitpod Flex. This change necessitates users to self-host their CDE infrastructure, posing challenges for those preferring a SaaS model. As an alternative, Harness offers its new Harness Cloud Development Environments, a SaaS-based CDE solution compatible with platforms like GitHub, Bitbucket, and GitLab, providing pre-configured, remote environments for coding and debugging. Harness CDEs include features such as on-demand development environments, integration with local and cloud IDEs, resource-intensive task support, and security protocols. Harness, known for its comprehensive software delivery platform, uses AI to optimize deployment processes and offers flexibility in module adoption. Migration to Harness CDE involves adopting the devcontainer.json format, which aligns with Gitpod's transition plans.
